How Cute Am I?

My name is Luca and I am a smiley guy- even though I got my first cold right after my mommy went back to work. I love staying home with grandma (even though I won't nap long enough for her to do anything else but hold me) and dad (who makes my cry b/c he keeps sticking that bulb up my nose to clear it out). Sometimes daddy takes me to visit mommy and eat lunch, I think she misses me. I am getting close to rolling over but am still not quite sure where to put my arm- it gets in the way a lot. I am laughing out loud now, especially when mommy makes piggy noises or anyone tickles me. I sleep through the night whenever I feel like it, but sometimes I just have to eat at 3am (usually I can hold out until 5am). I found out this week that soon I will have a second cousin to play with and I can't wait!

A Great Loss

My Grandpa George passed away early last Saturday. He was a veteran and one the last few living survivors of the war in the area he lived in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Luca is named after my grandfather's grandfather Luca and I will always regret that Luca never got to meet his great-grandfather George. He was out if it at the end due to pain medication and his organs failing. My dad and aunt spend his last few days with him saying goodbye.

His picture is the way I will always remember him. I learned a lot about him in my adult years, he spoke five languages that he learned from his family as well as during the war. I listened and read about what he really endured in the war and how much battle he really saw with the first armored division. I recently watched the war documentary on PBS and they described in detail what the men in his division went through and how many men they lost, over half if I remember the stats right, and they were virtually left to fend for themselves at times during the war. It was their push from Africa up through Italy that helped us gain victory in the end. Of course I am not a history buff so there are many more details but the idea of what he went through floored me at times. His sense of honor to his country was evident through my whole life, he was was the one who taught me about the flag and to never ever let it touch the ground (even if it was a little parade flag on the 4th of July it still deserved our respect).

Grandpa lived in his home until the last year when his health started to fail to the point where his multiple trips to McDonalds for a burger with mustard only were cut out and he was no longer able to drive. He still made it to church whenever he could and was very proud to take us to church whenever we visited. He was also survivor of cancer and not only the war. He will be remembered for his strong work ethic and strength. He was loved and will be missed.
From his Obituary:
"George Orlich, 91, of McMillan, Michigan passed away early Saturday morning October 11, 2008 at the Shady Lane AFC Home in Lakefield Township.
Born April 24, 1917 in Hurley, WI, son of Rade & Milosava (Susnar) Orlich, George was a 1935 graduate of Wakefield High School. George married the former Blanche E. Berry of Newberry on December 24, 1941 in Munising. She preceded him in death on January 8, 1995.

During his early years there, he was involved in the development of the refuge as a heavy equipment operator. He retired in 1973 after 37 years of service at Seney.
George initially lived in Germfask and then built a retirement home in McMillan to spend his final years there.
He was a life member of the Edward James Doran V.F.W. Post #8962 in Germfask and was also a member of All Saints Episcopal Church in Newberry.

Minnesota Zoo

Luca's first trip to the zoo for Rob's birthday, a present from grandma. We saw the 'Grizzley Coast'
exhibit and a quick trip around the rest of the zoo after Rob got home from work. Luca bear got to see a real bear (or its behind!).

Luca Bear. Life will never be the same! Or sleep. . . .

Luca is doing great, he rolled over once on the day he was 12 weeks but now he has not done it again. He is trying hard though (see pic). He is smiling and starting to giggle out loud. Luca has realized that he has hands and feet now but his favorite thing is the ceiling fan. His reflux is much better and he is a great sleeper now. Still up for the 3 or 4 am feeding and then 7 am which is way better than the waking up every two hours all night.

I knew I was not going to get any sleep at first but it was exhausting and the hormones are crazy, it got much better after 6-8 weeks tho. As soon as I was able to get 4 hours of sleep in a row things were better and the meds for reflux. I give a lot of credit to parents who have twins or multiples, two sets were born the week I was in the hospital and the moms were breastfeeding, I can't even imagine. It would be never ending nursing at first. Someone told me a newborns stomach is the size of a walnut and that is all the food they can take in at once, two babies would be refilling that walnut right after the other!

He has outgrown all of his 0-3 month clothes already. He fit in them at the beginning of the week and then by the end of the week they were all too tight! It is amazing how fast babies grow, I look at the 9 month clothes and I can't imagine him being that big but before I know it he will be.

It is really hard to leave him and go back to work. Of course he was just fine without me; dad and grandma had a great time with him. I am so blessed I do not have to wake him up and drag him to daycare every day. He gets to sleep in his own crib and stay in the environment he knows. It gets tricky with Rob's schedule between the two jobs but hopefully we can continue to make it work.

I am so thankful to have a healthy baby, all the blood testing, careful eating and constant calling to my nurse was all worth it. It is nice to be able to eat pizza and cheat a little again. Rob bought me some target sushi right after we got home from the hospital and it was good- yummy philly rolls! And thai food!

Finally blogging!

So, I have finally decided that we should have a blog since people will probably get tired of me emailing pictures of Luca all the time. Rob has taken an insane amount of shots and of course I think they are the cutest pictures ever so I want to share. (Rob took three hours of me in labor at the hospital on our video camera- thank god he didn't take all 16 hours-I made him shut it off in the third hour of pushing and the doctors were in the way during the c-section which I am bummed about now. I saw one on TV and wished I was able to see the moment he was born but it is not meant to be)
